For Commissioners > Setup > Scoring Setup > Custom Scoring System Setup

When setting up your league's scoring system using the MyFantasyLeague.com online scoring setup utility, there are four steps that you will need to follow.

1. Select a position or positions with which to define your league rules.  The online positions that will appear are those that have already been defined using the Starting Lineup Setup screen.  Note that you can select any of the individual positions by using the individual position checkboxes that appear immediately in front of each position and then click on the Continue button.  In order to define rules for the team positions, you must instead click on the corresponding link for the DT, ST, and/or OT.

       Step 1 of 4 - "Select Positions"

2. Once you've selected one or more individual positions and clicked on the Continue button (or alternately selected one of the team position links), you need to select the rule categories for your chosen position(2).  To add a rule, simply highlight it from the Available Scoring Rules (left-hand) pane and click on the Add To List> button.  To remove a rule, highlight it from the Currently Used Scoring Rules (right-hand) pane and click on the <Remove From List button.  When finished, click on the Continue button.  For team (OT, ST, & DT) positions, the "Opponent" checkbox also appears.  When checked any subsequently added rule will be defined as related to a team's opponent.  For example, the "Opponents Punt Return Yardage" rule might be defined to a team's ST awarding points for low values and charging points for higher values.

NOTE:  In order to combine rules already combined, use the CONTROL-Click method to select each of the rules to be combined before clicking on the Add To List> button.  For example, while the Rushing + Receiving Yards rule can be selected as a single rule, the only way to combine Offensive Points Against with ST Points Against (for the Defense) is to click on the Offensive Points Against rule, press and hold down the Control key on the keyboard, and then click on the ST Points Allowed rule.  Finally, click on the "Add to List" button.  The resulting "Offensive Points Against plus ST Points Against rule should now appear.

       Step 2 of 4 - "Select Rules For [position(s)]"

3. Now that your league's rules are properly selected for each position you are ready to define each rule.  Initially each rule will appear as a single row in the table with the Range and Points columns defined as 'No Range/Points Defined'.  Click on the Edit link that corresponds to a given rule to edit that rule.  Once a rule has been defined, click on the Test link for that rule to see how it will be scored.

       Step 3 of 4 - "Edit Rules For [position(s)]"

4. The last and final step for each rule is to edit it's scoring definition.  There are three ways to define each rule; as a simple bonus, on a per-occurrence basis, or as an incremental award for a numeric range.

Step 4 of 4 - "Edit One Rule" (defining a bonus)

When defining a bonus for a rule, you must use the PTS option from the drop-down menu.  An example of this might be to award a 5 point bonus for a player who gains 100 yards rushing in a single game.  To set this up, define as follows:

From  100 yards to  999 yards gets  5   pts          yards

       Step 4 of 4 - "Edit One Rule" (defining a per-occurrence award)

When defining a per-occurrence award, you must use the PTS EACH option from the drop-down menu.  An example of this might be to award 6 points for a player who scores a rushing TD.  To set this up, define as follows:

From  1 TDs to  99 TDs gets  6 pts each        TDs

set-customScoring4b

Step 4 of 4 - "Edit One Rule" (defining an incremental award for a range)

When defining an incremental award for a range you must use the PTS EVERY option from the drop-down menu.  An example of this might be to award 1 point for every 10 yards rushing for a player.  To set this up, define as follows:

From  1 yards to  999 yards gets  1   pts for every   10 yards

set-customScoring4c

Once you've completed defining a rule, you MUST click on the Save Rule And Continue button to add it to your league.  If you run out of ranges (ie, you need more than the five default rows that appear), click on the Save Rule And Add More Ranges button which will increase the rows in table for the given rule.

NOTE: Use the checkboxes for "Show Conditional Scoring Options" and "Show Formula Scoring Options" for advanced rule definitions.  Checking the "Show Conditional Scoring Options" checkbox allows the commissioner to set up rules along the lines of "...only if the number of passing attempts is greater than 10".  Checking the "Show Formula Scoring Options" checkbox allows the commissioner to set up rules along the lines of "10 points for 250 passing yards, and then 2 points for every 25 yards thereafter".

Decimal Scoring

The system supports decimal scoring to three decimal places (thousandths of a point).  In order to use decimal scoring, two conditions must be met:

1. The General Scoring Setup screen parameter for decimal scoring must be changed from the default of "0" decimal places to "1" (tenths), "2" (hundredths),  or "3" (thousandths) decimal places.

2. The individual scoring rules are properly defined for decimal scoring.

CORRECT: Rushing Yardage - From 1yard to 999 yards gets 0.1 point each

INCORRECT: Rushing Yardage - From 1yard to 999 yards gets 1 point for every 10 yard

In this final, incorrect example, a RB will only receive a whole point at each 10-yard increment.  For example, a RB with 128 yards rushing will receive 12 points (and not 12.8 points as in the two above, correct examples).

Testing Your Rules

Like all scoring rules, you should always verify that the information you have defined is exactly as you expect it to be.  Go to the Top Performers/Player Stats report to complete this step.  Note that immediately after you define your rules, this report will display the following message:

Warning! The results on this page are out of date with respect to your recently updated league scoring rules. These results will be updated to reflect the newest league scoring rules within the next three hours.

If you see this message (even if you see values for the players in the report), please check back in a few hours to verify your rules.   Test the scoring by selecting a variety of players from all positions and selecting the point total link for any week for these players.  The resulting Detailed Results screen will appear for the chosen player/week.  Make sure that the fantasy points awarded for this player AND the reason why they have been awarded is in agreement with your league's rules.
