Fantasy Football NFL Opponent Rankings

Friday, October 16th, 2009

We added two new columns to the Player Profile pages in your fantasy football league.  See Steve Smith’s player page here for an example.  The new columns are “Opp Rush” and “Opp Pass“.  These columns indicate the ranking (1 is best, 32 is worst) of the NFL opponent’s defense against the Rush and the Pass.  So if you see a low number in the Opp Rush column for a given week, then you know this player is going up against a highly ranked rush defense.  Conversely, if you see a relatively high number in the Opp Pass column, for example, then you know this player is going up against a poorly ranked passing defense.  The rankings are based on the average rushing and passing yardage allowed per game by the defense.  Hopefully this additional information will help you evaluate players for future match ups as you make your roster and waiver decisions each week.

And while you’re viewing a player, don’t forget about the Compare Player option at the bottom of each Player Profile page.  You can click on the pull down list to bring up a comparison between any two (or more) players for some side-by-side analysis.

Fantasy Football Receiver Targets

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

We’ve recently added a new stats columns to the “Top Performers/Player Stats” report in your fantasy football league.  Now as part of the Top Receivers report, you’ll see “Targets” as a column, such as this example from our sample league.  The column is labeled “Tgt” and as always you can click on the column header to sort by that stats.  So what is the target stat all about?  It’s the number of times a player was the intended receiver on a passing play.  It can be helpful to get a feel for which receivers (or tight ends or running backs) were most active in the passing game.  Even a player only had a couple of receptions, he may have had two or three times as many targets, which could point to some potential if/when they can turn those targets into catches.  Just another stat to help you make better lineup decisions.  Enjoy!  Note that you’ll also see this column now on the Player Profile page, such as this example.

Draft Recap Analysis

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

With the busiest fantasy football drafting weekend behind us, it’s time for most leagues to settle in and start analyzing how well their draft went. For team owners, this means taking a close look at your roster compared to the other rosters in the league to figure out your  strengths and weaknesses. It’s the last chance to brag about your awesome team that you just drafted before the reality of Week #1 hits and your roster is put to the test in a real-life game. So with that in mind, be sure to check out the  “Draft Recap” report! It’s a tongue-in-cheek analysis of your fantasy football draft, based mostly on ADP Rankings. In other words, it looks at the players you drafted and which round and pick you selected them, and then compares that to the overall average round and pick that those players were selected in by all the other leagues at MyFantasyLeague.com. It’s a quick and dirty way to compare how well your team did in the draft on a relative scale compared to the others.

The best part is that we’ve taken it a step further by throwing in some random quotes about the draft, and turning it into a fun recap that should hopefully provoke some trash talking amongst your owners here during this last week of the pre-season. So give your Draft Recap a look. You can access it from the “Reports > League > Draft” screen by clicking on the “Draft Recap” link at the top of that page.

Here’s a sample excerpt from a Draft Recap:

Coach Tony Holm had a distinguished draft in the recent 2009 FanEx draft. Their The Sharks franchise came away with the number 2 ranked draft (out of 12) in the league based on analysis by MyFantasyLeague.com.

The Sharks made their best pick of the draft in round 6, selecting Roy Williams with the 67th pick of the draft, as compared to the 45th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “Players like that don’t come around very often,” The Sharks  coach Tony Holm said.

The Sharks made their worst pick of the draft in round 12, selecting Ricky Williams with the 139th pick of the draft, as compared to the 170th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “His attitude is a question mark,” The Sharks coach Tony Holm said.

Starting in week 7,The Sharks won’t be able to submit a full lineup, due to having 1 defensive team on bye.

With a little bit of work on the waiver wire this season, or a few strategic trades, coach Tony Holm should be able to turn their 2nd ranked draft effort into a championship fantasy team this year.

Keep in mind that this report is intended as harmless entertainment, and is not by any means a thorough technical analysis of your league’s draft. Hopefully your owners will get a kick out of the report and enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed concocting it :)   Also, this report is only  intended for standard redraft leagues. It does not really read well for keeper or dynasty leagues with rookie-only drafts, and therefore it does not show up as an option for those types of leagues.

League Championship Plaque

Plaque

Plaque

As discussed earlier this month, we added a new League Champions Report that keeps track of the winning franchises in your fantasy football league each season.  Since then, we’ve also added a new League Championship Plaque home page module.  Be sure to check it out if your league has been with MyFantasyLeague.com for more than one season.  It will show your league’s yearly champions on a graphical image of a plaque, complete with the franchise name and owner name for each season.  You can use the “For Commissioners > Setup > Appearance > Home Page Modules and Tabs Setup” screen to add this to your league and to position it where you want.

Top Performers Time Frame

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The “Top Performers” report is an excellent source of player stats and fantasy scores for your league, as discussed here on this blog last summer.  Now we’ve added even more flexibility to this report to allow you to select the specific time frame of weeks that you want to display.  There is a new “Start Week” and “End Week” selection list at the top of the report, compared to the previous choice of selecting a specific week, or year-to-date, or the past 3 or 6 weeks.  So now you can fine tune your starting and ending week when viewing player scores and stats.  It will still default to the year-to-date option by automatically selecting week 1 as the starting week and the current week as the ending week, so the basic functionality hasn’t changed.  Some examples of ways that you can refine the report now:

  • You can separate the first half of the season from the second half, and generate a report for each half as needed.
  • You can view the past two or three weeks, or any other number of past weeks as needed.
  • You can view just the regular season weeks 1 through 17 even if your league uses the NFL playoff weeks.

Hopefully the new time frame flexibility will help you with your player research for your upcoming draft as well!  Watch for more changes and improvements with the various stat reports in the future.

League Champions Report

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

We’ve added a new report and a few new options to your league on MyFantasyLeague.com to help you keep track of your championship fantasy football teams from year to year.  For starters, check out the new “League Champions Setup” screen on the “For Commissioners > Setup > History Setup” screen.  You’ll see a pull down list that lets you specify your championship franchise for the current season.  Note that you can specify up to the top 4 teams, so if you want to specify the runner-ups as well as the champions, you are all set.   Then you can do this for each year of history that you have on MyFantasyLeague.com.

After that is done, you and your franchise owners can use the new “Reports > Records > League Champions” report to view the history of all of the championships for your league over the years!  There is also a new Home Page Module called “League Champions” that you can add to your home page as needed.

We’ll continue to add more history oriented features to the system to help you track your league history and keep track of milestones and special accomplishments by players and franchises in the league!

Monday Report

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

We’ve added a new home page module called the “Monday Report” that gives you a quick overview of the fantasy games in your league that are still to be decided.  It will list each matchup on the left, with a list of players that still have to play in the Monday night game for each fantasy team.  In addition, it will show the projected points for each of the players in the Monday night game.  So if your team is losing after the Sunday night game, you can use this report to get a quick feel for your chances!  If you are ahead going into the Monday night game, you can use it to figure out how much you have to sweat it out.  And since some leagues award negative points for things like fumbles and interceptions, you may have to worry about negative scoring events even if you are in the lead and your opponent doesn’t have any players remaining.

To add this home page module to your league, you can use the “For Commissioners > Setup > Appearance Setup > Home Page Modules and Tabs Setup” screen.  Note that this module won’t show anything from Tuesday through Sunday since it is only useful on Mondays.  Many thanks to “habman” and the rest of our active community of commissioners that have helped develop and inspire ideas like this one over the years in our community support forum.

Projected Scores

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Another fun report you can use for trash talking and pondering your fantasy football fate even before the games start each week is found on the “Reports > Franchise > Projected Scores” screen.  This report will show the projected scores for each player for the upcoming week after a lineup is submitted by an owner.   So you can check it out after you submit your lineup to see how your starting lineup decisions compare to the Fantasy Sharks Lineup Coach, which is what is used to generate these projected scores.

Basically, what the system does is take your league’s scoring system and applies it to the weekly stat projections that Fantasy Sharks provides.  That allows it to calculate a projected score for each player on your roster, and then a projected score for your fantasy team based on your lineup.  It’s a great way to get a feel for how well your team should perform this week, and also a great way to compare your team to your opponent.

Bonus:  This week we’ve updated the report to include bench players as well as starters, so now you can quickly see if FantasySharks.com is predicting better scores for your bench players!  If yes, then you may want to dig deeper into your lineup decisions to see if you agree with their predictions.  Of course, it is all based on projections, so there aren’t any guarantees.  It’s intended for fun and enjoyment, but the guys at Fantasy Sharks do a great job with their weekly projected stats, so you’ll probably get a kick of out this report if you haven’t seen it yet.  Enjoy!

Weekly Matchup Chart

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

We’ve added another new chart for your viewing pleasure.  This one charts your scoring over the course of the weekend, with an updated comparison after each set of games.  So on a typical week, you’ll see a chart showing how your score compared to your fantasy opponent after the early games on Sunday, and then after the late afternoon game, and then after the Sunday night game, and finally after the Monday night game.  It’s a great way to see how your fantasy team fared throughout the day on Sunday and if/when there were any lead changes in your fantasy matchup.  You can view this new chart on the “Reports > Franchise > Fantasy Recaps” screen.  See an example below:

Matchup Chart Example
Matchup Chart Example

This example shows how the team named “Last Place” in blue was behind his opponent named “Snakebit” in yellow all day on Sunday, and then it shows how they pulled out the win on Monday night.  Talk about the agony of defeat!  When you view this chart in combination with your Fantasy Recap report along with the corresponding table of individual player scores that shows up on that report, it gives you a great summary of exactly how your fantasy team performed this week.  Hopefully it will generate some good trash talking and bragging rights for your owners!  As with other charts that we’ve introduced, you can move the mouse over the individual data points to view a pop-up hint with more details.  In this case, you can mouse over a data point to see the actual score for each team at each point during the day.

Fantasy Recap

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

If you haven’t discovered the “Reports > Franchise > Fantasy Recap” report for your league yet, then be sure to check it out for some entertaining recaps of your weekly fantasy football games.  We’ve put a trash-talking, fantasy spin on your fantasy match-up each week.  It’s easiest to explain with an example from our sample league here:

(MyFantasyLeague.com Fantasy Times Sources – Oct 6, 2008) In a week 5 MyFantasyLeague.com Fantasy Football intra-divisional matchup, Marooned beat a strong Deep Divot team by a score of 81 to 70, extending the winning streak for Marooned to 3 games.

Marooned were led to their 11 point victory by a 21 point effort from Clinton Portis, who beat the Philadelphia Eagles defense for 145 rushing yards and 1 rushing td in addition to 13 receiving yards. With this performance, Portis was the number 3 ranked running back for week 5. They also got help from a 19 point effort from Roddy White, who beat the Green Bay Packers defense for 132 receiving yards and 1 receiving td.

We’re going to savor this victory,” Marooned coach Susan said.

Deep Divot were helped out in a losing cause by a 18 point effort from Ronnie Brown, who beat the San Diego Chargers defense for 125 rushing yards and 1 rushing td in addition to 8 receiving yards. With this performance, Brown was the number 5 ranked running back for week 5. They also got help from a 18 point effort from Peyton Manning, who got by the Houston Texans defense for 247 passing yards and 2 passing tds in addition to 8 rushing yards.

They ate our lunch,” Deep Divot coach Joe said.

Compounding the issue, Deep Divot could have scored 91 points and gotten the win with their best lineup, but Joe left key players like Domenik Hixon and his corresponding 17 points on the bench.

This brings the record for Marooned to 3-2, and drops Deep Divot to a record of 2-3.

Coming up in week 6, Deep Divot are at the 2-3 Hindenberg, where Hindenberg are an early 1.2-point favorite, while Marooned are at the 1-4 Last Place, where Last Place are an early 25.0-point underdog.

We’ve thrown in some random quotes along with the computer generated analysis of your game.  And even better, all of the owners in the league can click on their random quote to type their own quote into the recap instead.  So each team can personalize their Fantasy Recap if desired.  Hopefully it will generate some buzz and trash talking each week!

There is also a Fantasy Recap Home Page Module, so you can add the Fantasy Recap Game of the Week to your league home page for quick and easy reference.  By default, the game of the week is the one with the closest score.  But the commissioner can select a different game of the week if desired while viewing the full report with all of the recaps.
