Fake Field Goals

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Fumbles and Laterals and Trick Plays in the NFL can cause all sorts of confusion for commissioners of fantasy football leagues.   To help with that issue, we’ll highlight and document all of the various “strange” or “unusual” plays each week, so you can confirm that your scoring rules have been properly set up in your fantasy football league.  Just go to the “Help > Strange Plays” menu item in your league to view the summary list each week.  Then come here to read more details as needed in our blog.  We’ll discuss  various types of unusual plays and how they might impact your league.

This week’s most unusual play for a lot of leagues involved the “fake” field goal that resulted in a Rushing TD for the Redskins by their punter.  As noted in our strange plays summary, this is scored by the NFL and shows up in any typical box score as just a regular Rushing TD.  Therefore, the stats are scored that way for your league.  The NFL does not track “fakes” or other events like this at all, so there isn’t any automatic way to have it scored for your league as a special type of touchdown.  The raw stats and the box score for this will be the same as any other rushing play in the game.   It does show Hunter Smith (a punter) as the person that ran it for a score, but that is really the only indicator that it was an unusual play, unless you scrutinize the play-by-play listing to see what exactly happened on that scoring play.

If you want this touchdown to be counted as a TD for your Punter position, then be sure to add the “Rushing TD” rule to your Punter position.  However, if you want to score this as a touchdown for your Special Teams or Team Defense position, then you will have to manually add the points for this to your league by using the “Setup > Adjust Scores and Standings > Player Score Adjuster” screen.  Note that you won’t want to add the “Rushing TD” rule to your Special Teams position, because that would cause all rushing TDs for the entire game to be credited to the Special Teams.

So the bottom line is that “fake” plays, either on a punt or kickoff, are not tracked as a raw stat by the NFL, so therefore they cannot be scored automatically for your fantasy football league.  Our recommendation is to treat them like any other rushing or passing TD rather than trying to find them each week and score them as a special teams play.  However, if you want to credit them to your Special Teams position, then you can scan the “Help > Strange Plays” listing each week to check for them and then manually add the points to your league as needed.

Rate My Team

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Now that your fantasy football draft is done, you’re probably wondering how well your fantasy football team will do this season.  You can find out at least one professional opinion with one click of the mouse from your Franchise Information page in your league.  To get there, just click on your franchise name from any report or screen in your league.  Then in the upper right you’ll see a link that says “FBG Rate My Team“.  Click on that link and you’ll be taken to the Rate My Team application, which was developed by footballguys.com this year.  It’s a great way to receive an in-depth analysis of your team, complete with recommendations about what you can do to improve your roster.  Since they worked with us to integrate the application into our leagues using our Developer’s API, it saves you the time of entering your league parameters, so you can get an analysis of your team very quickly.  And it’s free!  So check it out this opening weekend and enjoy the games!

Fantasy Football Kickoff!

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Kickoff is almost here…  Your draft is done, and now it’s time to submit your lineups and prepare for the first week of the season!  Enjoy the Thursday night game, and good luck with your fantasy football match up this week.  Depending on how your league is configured, you may be able to modify your starting lineup after tonight’s kickoff, but it’s always best to submit a full lineup before the first game of the week.

Use LeagueSafe to Manage your League Finances

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Last year we teamed up with the LeagueSafe.com web site to help commissioners relieve themselves of one of the biggest burdens for commissioners…  collecting league dues before the draft and paying out league prizes after the fantasy playoffs.  Any commissioner knows about the annual nuisance.  You have to hound your team owners in the weeks leading up to the draft to make sure they remember to pay the annual league dues before the draft.  Then for the two or three owners that forget, you have to continue to nag them all season long until they finally pay up.  And it doesn’t end there. After the season is over, you have to figure out how to contact the winners and get them their prizes in a timely manner.

Enter LeagueSafe!  It was conceived and developed by Paul Charchian, who has been involved with fantasy football leagues for over 15 years as a radio show host and as a co-founder of Fanball.com.  So he has thought through the process thoroughly and came up with a great solution for leagues that want to have someone else manage their finances.  You can read a Wall Street Journal article about it, or read the Press Release for more information.

For leagues that want to take advantage of the LeagueSafe service, we’ve made it very easy to do with the new option under the “For Commissioners > Setup” screen called “Manage League Finances Using LeagueSafe“.  Just click on that option in your league and follow the steps on that screen, and then you’ll be all set.  You won’t have to worry about the hassle of collecting dues from your owners, and all of your owners will be able to rest easier knowing that their money is being held by an FDIC insured account, and that it will only be used for paying out the league prizes (and optionally the league hosting fee on MyFantasyLeague.com).

That’s the other great thing about this service.  If the commissioner doesn’t want to pay for the MyFantasyLeague.com league up front, he can designate that as an option when signing up for LeagueSafe.  Then when owners start paying their league dues, the cost of managing the league on MFL will be taken care of automatically as well.  Be sure to visit LeagueSafe.com for additional info or details.

Draft Recap Analysis

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

With the busiest fantasy football drafting weekend behind us, it’s time for most leagues to settle in and start analyzing how well their draft went. For team owners, this means taking a close look at your roster compared to the other rosters in the league to figure out your  strengths and weaknesses. It’s the last chance to brag about your awesome team that you just drafted before the reality of Week #1 hits and your roster is put to the test in a real-life game. So with that in mind, be sure to check out the  “Draft Recap” report! It’s a tongue-in-cheek analysis of your fantasy football draft, based mostly on ADP Rankings. In other words, it looks at the players you drafted and which round and pick you selected them, and then compares that to the overall average round and pick that those players were selected in by all the other leagues at MyFantasyLeague.com. It’s a quick and dirty way to compare how well your team did in the draft on a relative scale compared to the others.

The best part is that we’ve taken it a step further by throwing in some random quotes about the draft, and turning it into a fun recap that should hopefully provoke some trash talking amongst your owners here during this last week of the pre-season. So give your Draft Recap a look. You can access it from the “Reports > League > Draft” screen by clicking on the “Draft Recap” link at the top of that page.

Here’s a sample excerpt from a Draft Recap:

Coach Tony Holm had a distinguished draft in the recent 2009 FanEx draft. Their The Sharks franchise came away with the number 2 ranked draft (out of 12) in the league based on analysis by MyFantasyLeague.com.

The Sharks made their best pick of the draft in round 6, selecting Roy Williams with the 67th pick of the draft, as compared to the 45th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “Players like that don’t come around very often,” The Sharks  coach Tony Holm said.

The Sharks made their worst pick of the draft in round 12, selecting Ricky Williams with the 139th pick of the draft, as compared to the 170th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “His attitude is a question mark,” The Sharks coach Tony Holm said.

Starting in week 7,The Sharks won’t be able to submit a full lineup, due to having 1 defensive team on bye.

With a little bit of work on the waiver wire this season, or a few strategic trades, coach Tony Holm should be able to turn their 2nd ranked draft effort into a championship fantasy team this year.

Keep in mind that this report is intended as harmless entertainment, and is not by any means a thorough technical analysis of your league’s draft. Hopefully your owners will get a kick out of the report and enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed concocting it :)   Also, this report is only  intended for standard redraft leagues. It does not really read well for keeper or dynasty leagues with rookie-only drafts, and therefore it does not show up as an option for those types of leagues.

Average Auction Values

Friday, September 4th, 2009

In addition to our very popular Average Daft Position Rankings, we also have Average Auction Values that are updated daily.  Click on the link to check out the latest player auction values from all of the fantasy football auctions that have already taken place on MyFantasyLeague.com. You can slice and dice the data in various ways, such as by position, by league size, or by scoring system.  You can also specify the time frame, and choose to view data only for recent auctions instead of all auctions in the system.  It’s a great resource to help you prepare for your auction to get a feel for how much players are worth and how much they have been going for in other leagues, especially if you have faith in the wisdom of crowds.

And if you’re a coder that likes to manipulate data like this, you can use our Open Developer’s API to grab the data from an XML feed to do whatever you want with it.  We also have an Average Auction Values Home Page Module that you can add to your league so all of your team owners have quick and easy access to it.  And we have an AAV  Widget that you can put on any web page.  Use the “Reports > League > MFL Widgets” screen for more info on doing that.
